Summary

In December 1956, a civilian in Iowa discovered the remains of an unidentified balloon near Cedar Falls. The object, whose size and material were unclear, showed no identifiable markings. Despite efforts by several air and intelligence units to determine its origin, no definitive identification was made. It was initially suspected to be of foreign origin or from a known launch site, but these possibilities were later dismissed, causing some initial alarm.

The case was escalated to the Unidentified Flying Object (UFO) file due to the inability to determine its origin. The find was sent to the 788th ACW in Waverly, Iowa, and then to the Air Technical Intelligence Center (ATIC) for further analysis. Although it was concluded to be a balloon, its origin and purpose remained uncertain. The case was considered of interest for air intelligence, and a deeper analysis was suggested by specialists. The find did not yield a clear resolution but was documented as part of the UFO records of the time.
