Summary

In December 1956, two U.S. Air Force pilots were practicing ground radar-guided intercepts when one of them detected an unusual object on the radar. The object appeared as a bright blip 20 miles away and 30 degrees to the pilot's left. It was not visible to the trailing aircraft 6 miles behind or to ground radar. The pilot described the object as tan-colored, flat on the bottom, and round on top. Despite attempts to close the distance, the jet's radar was suddenly jammed, and the object vanished from the scope. Subsequent checks confirmed the jet's equipment was functioning properly, reinforcing the idea that the object was not a natural phenomenon or a typical weather balloon.

The official investigation concluded the radar might have picked up a false target or interference, but the pilot's testimony and visual description suggest something unusual. The object not only moved at extreme speeds but also made a sudden turn and rapidly disappeared. Although conventional explanations like weather balloons were considered, the location and characteristics of the event did not match known launches. This case, documented in declassified files, remains a mystery that defies conventional explanations.
