🇺🇸 USAF — Project Blue Book
In March 1957, a military report documented the sighting of lights in the sky above Rapid City, South Dakota. Witnesses noted a circular pattern of lights emitting colors such as white, blue, and red. The lights were above a thin layer of clouds and moving slowly northward. The report mentions that the object was observed for 30 minutes, an unusual duration for an aircraft. Although several experts considered the possibility of a balloon or an auroral display, there was not enough information for a conclusive evaluation.
The lack of photographs and precise data complicated the analysis. The officer who submitted the report, S/Sgt Thomas J. O'Neill, noted that the phenomenon was observed by multiple witnesses and that the object disappeared after 30 minutes. Due to the incomplete nature of the data, the report did not reach a definitive conclusion. This case adds to the list of unidentified aerial phenomena that generated interest and debate during the Cold War.
