🇺🇸 USAF — Project Blue Book
In April 1957, a mysterious object was detected on radar over the English Channel, traveling at speeds exceeding 900 miles per hour. British Javelin jets were scrambled from Odiham Base to intercept it, but failed to catch up, as the object outpaced them by a significant margin. The object's speed, far beyond the 600 mph of the jets, sparked immediate concern and investigation. Although some speculated it could be a test aircraft, official confirmation was delayed.
Eventually, it was revealed to be a French Mirage jet, an experimental fighter capable of such high speeds. Despite this explanation, the incident generated widespread speculation and reports of orange lights, TV interference, and descriptions like a "flying golf ball." While no photos were taken and the identity remained uncertain for days, the case remains a classic example of how advanced aerospace technology can be mistaken for the unknown.
