Summary

In June 1957, a U.S. Air Force pilot observed an aerial phenomenon near Cotulla, Texas. According to the report, the object appeared as three squares in a row with a tail about one yard long, the size of a basketball, and a blue-green color. The pilot saw it moving at 21,000 feet, descending at a 20-degree angle toward Earth, until it broke apart as if it had exploded. The sighting lasted only two seconds and no sound was heard. Although the possibility of a balloon or aircraft was considered, the report concluded it was an astronomical meteor, a bolide, which matched the description of a luminous body disintegrating upon entering the atmosphere.

The report, classified under Project 10073, was submitted by Lieutenant Edward D. McCabe, who was stationed at Laredo airport. The area had favorable weather conditions for observation, with clear skies and moderate winds. Despite the brevity of the sighting and the lack of photographs, the meteorological data and visual description were enough to classify the phenomenon as a bolide. This case is an example of how UFO reports often find natural explanations, although they retain an air of mystery due to the speed and uniqueness of the events.
