Summary

In June 1957, an officer at Floyd Bennett Field in New York observed an unidentified object. The object, described as elliptical and the size of a basketball, was silver in color and moving slowly from west to east. The observation lasted between 50 and 60 seconds, but the object disappeared due to sky conditions. Although no photos were taken, a Rawinsonde balloon had been launched nearby and was still visible, leading to the consideration that the object might be a weather balloon. However, the description and behavior of the object did not fully match what would be expected from a balloon.

Weather data indicated strong winds at various altitudes, complicating the precise identification of the object. The official report did not reach a definitive conclusion but noted that the object could have been a Rawinsonde balloon. Despite this, the visual description and steady movement of the object suggest it might have been something different. This case, like many others from the era, reflects the difficulty of distinguishing between natural phenomena and unidentified objects, especially in a time when technology and communication were still developing.
