🇺🇸 USAF — Project Blue Book
In August 1957, a citizen from Bakersfield, California, reported seeing what he described as a "fireball" moving across the sky. His letter to the army was referred to the Air Force for analysis. Investigators concluded that the object was likely a meteorite, specifically part of the Perseid meteor shower, a known astronomical event that occurs around that time of year. The observer's description matched that of "fireballs," which are bright meteors that often persist until they reach the ground. Although other explanations such as balloons or aircraft were not ruled out, the most plausible explanation pointed to a natural phenomenon.
