🇺🇸 USAF — Project Blue Book
A round object, smaller than a star and reddish in color was observed for 45 minutes in the sky over Olean, New York, in August 1957. The witness described it as a bright moving light with an up and down motion. Although initially it might seem unusual, investigators concluded it was a weather balloon. The coincidence with a scheduled launch and wind directions supported this explanation. Additionally, the reddish colors observed were explained by sunlight reflected off the balloon at high altitude, a common phenomenon at dawn or dusk.
The official report, part of Project 10073, was processed by multiple military offices, including the Lockport base in New York. The witness, a 32-year-old civil defense director, used binoculars to observe the phenomenon. Despite the prolonged duration and unusual movement, there was no evidence of non-terrestrial activity. This case reflects how many UFO sightings are resolved with natural or technological explanations, even when the initial appearance may seem mysterious.
