Summary

In October 1957, multiple sightings of luminous objects were recorded across various parts of the United States. These objects, described as white, amber, or with changing colors, appeared in the sky for several hours and sometimes displayed tails or halos. Although some witnesses mistook them for aircraft or balloons, the official conclusion pointed to astronomical phenomena, specifically Comet Encke. This comet, visible to the naked eye, was the third of the year and explained many of the sightings. Descriptions varied, but many aligned with the idea that the objects remained stationary or moved slowly, characteristics typical of celestial bodies. Military and civilian authorities collaborated in data collection, although in some cases a clear identification was not achieved. Most reports concluded there was no evidence of unidentified objects, but rather natural explanations.
