Summary

In October 1957, a U.S. Navy weather station in Kokiak, Alaska, recorded an unusual aerial phenomenon. A star-shaped object, three times the size of a first-magnitude star, displayed erratic pulses of red, white, blue, purple, and orange. Two distinct lights were observed, one above the other, resembling a suspended balloon with reflections from the bottom. On two occasions, a luminous tail was seen, and the object moved in bursts—hovering and then rapidly moving for 2-3 seconds. The sighting lasted 40 minutes, ending with the object being one-third its original size.

Although observers concluded it might be a balloon with lights, there was no precise data on upper winds due to equipment failure, leaving open the possibility of a non-conventional object. The report, signed by an intelligence officer, offered no clear explanation, adding mystery to a case that included an 18x10 inch photo. The detailed description and the witnesses' seriousness make this an intriguing example of the uncertainty surrounding sightings during that era.
