Summary

A former naval pilot and ex-FBI agent described an extremely bright object moving rapidly across the sky in Massapequa Park, New York, on October 31, 1957. The observer, R. B. Mason, claimed the object traveled about 120 degrees of arc in just 6-7 seconds, indicating an impressive angular speed. Despite his efforts to rule out natural explanations, such as a meteor, military authorities concluded the phenomenon could be astronomical, possibly a meteor. There were no radar reports or aerial sightings supporting the presence of an unidentified object. The original letter from the observer, addressed to air authorities, was filed and no further action was taken.

The case was evaluated by the Air Technical Intelligence Center, which concluded there was insufficient information to determine the object's nature with certainty. Although the observer insisted it wasn't a meteor due to its flat trajectory, experts considered the described characteristics compatible with an astronomical phenomenon. The document also includes information on other sightings in November 1957, many of which were attributed to Venus, meteors, or searchlights. The Massapequa Park case remains an example of how UFO reports were analyzed and archived during the Cold War.
