🇺🇸 USAF — Project Blue Book
In November 1957, personnel at Whiteman Air Force Base in Missouri recorded multiple radar contacts with unidentified objects. Radars picked up signals that varied in speed and direction without a clear pattern, sometimes appearing as ground targets. Despite operators reviewing routes and weather conditions, the cause of the returns could not be identified. Radar scope photos were taken, though results were inconclusive. Later analyses suggested the signals might be spurious, possibly caused by interference or atmospheric conditions. However, the lack of visual sightings or confirmation by other radars left the matter unresolved.
The base submitted data to higher authorities, including images and trajectory diagrams. An officer noted the objects displayed unusual behavior, such as making sharp turns near the radar antenna. Despite efforts, no definitive explanation was reached. This case reflects the difficulty military faced at the time in interpreting unexplained aerial phenomena, and how technical records were key for analysis, though often insufficient to solve the mystery.
