🇺🇸 USAF — Project Blue Book
In November 1957, several commercial and military pilots reported a bright explosion in the sky over Pennsylvania. The object, described as the size of a dime held at arm's length, emitted a flash similar to a photographic bulb. The explosion occurred at an extremely high altitude, well beyond typical aircraft limits, and left a visible white vapor trail. Although initially considered a possible balloon or aircraft, meteorological data and the absence of Leonids meteor shower activity supported the theory of a meteor or bolide.
The observers included five separate flight crews, strengthening the credibility of the sighting. The Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory was consulted and concluded the event was consistent with a bolide. Despite the detailed description and multiple witnesses, no photographs or additional records confirmed the nature of the event. The final report classified it as likely astronomical, closing the case without further investigation.
