🇺🇸 USAF — Project Blue Book
In November 1957, a civilian in Santa Monica observed a silver-gray spherical object the size of a grapefruit with blades underneath, 1.5 miles from the ocean. The sighting lasted two minutes and was considered possibly a balloon, aircraft, or astronomical object. Investigators suggested it might have been a reflection of the sun off an aircraft. The detailed description of the object and its curved flight path generated some curiosity, but there were no photographs or radar data to confirm its nature.
The official report classified it as "insufficient data for evaluation," indicating no definitive conclusion was reached. Despite the lack of conclusive evidence, the witness's testimony and the detailed description of the object give insight into how such cases were handled in the 1950s. The area was known for heavy air traffic, increasing the likelihood of visual confusion, but also the importance of carefully investigating each report.
