🇺🇸 USAF — Project Blue Book
In November 1957, a civilian observer in Ohio spotted a faint object traveling from northwest to southeast. The direction and timing of the sighting closely matched the expected path of Sputnik I, the first artificial satellite launched by the Soviet Union. The report concluded there was no reason to believe the object was anything other than the satellite. This case is a clear example of how early satellite sightings were often mistaken for unexplained aerial phenomena.
The testimony was corroborated by members of the local astronomical society, who also observed the satellite's passage. Although Sputnik I had already stopped transmitting, its visibility in the sky generated both interest and confusion. These kinds of records help explain how the space age led to a surge in UFO reports.
