🇺🇸 USAF — Project Blue Book
A bright object fell near Hamburg in December 1957, creating a crater about 2 feet deep. The impact scorched the grass and left a white-gray residue. Despite thorough investigation, no metal fragments were found. Analysis showed magnesium and aluminum oxides, with magnesium being predominant. The U.S. Navy concluded it was likely a balloon, though a signal device could not be ruled out. The meteorite theory was dismissed by the local professor, who noted the object appeared man-made.
The impact site was a swampy area, complicating recovery efforts. German engineers dug a 10-foot hole with no success. While a ship signal device was suggested, the distance from the nearest port made it unlikely. The crater was eventually refilled and the case closed without a definitive answer.
