🇺🇸 USAF — Project Blue Book
A lawyer in Fort Worth observed a bright star-like object on January 23, 1958. While searching for Sputnik II, he saw an object moving northeast, slowing down, and either disappearing or merging with a star. The initial report classified it as likely a high-altitude F-100 fighter jet. The witness, along with his daughter, thought it was a satellite, but subsequent analyses, including checks with observatories and radar, found no anomalous objects. It was concluded that the phenomenon was consistent with a fighter jet whose afterburners were suddenly turned on or off, creating an optical illusion similar to a satellite.
The case was reviewed by Dr. J. Allen Hynek, who confirmed there was no evidence of an unidentified object. The initial confusion was attributed to the lack of proper instruments and human visual perception, which can misinterpret conventional objects like jets or meteors. The official report noted that the object was not Sputnik or any astronomical phenomenon, and the description matched what would be expected from a jet at high altitude.
