🇺🇸 USAF — Project Blue Book
In February 1958, two hunters discovered an unusual object along the Ohio River in Indiana. The object, round in shape and made of half plastic and half fiber, was handed over to military authorities for analysis. After evaluation, it was determined to be a magnetometer, a scientific instrument used to measure the Earth's magnetic field. Though initially intriguing, the object turned out to be a standard tool, likely carried to high altitude by a balloon to collect remote data.
The magnetometer was designed to measure the horizontal component of the Earth's magnetic field, a common practice in geophysical research. Its pendulous mounting confirmed this function. Despite the lack of images or additional data, experts concluded the device had no connection to unidentified aerial phenomena. This case highlights how conventional scientific equipment could spark interest during a time of heightened UFO surveillance and mystery.
