🇺🇸 USAF — Project Blue Book
In February 1958, a radar in Hokkaido, Japan, recorded a strange phenomenon resembling an explosion. The radar showed a dense cloud rapidly expanding, reaching nearly 46,000 feet in altitude. Five Russian aircraft in the area approached the phenomenon, suggesting it was not a natural event. Witnesses compared it to the explosion of a large ammunition ship. Additionally, fishermen reported bright lights and there were seismic detection reports of a possible nuclear explosion in the region. The rapid development and aircraft reaction ruled out common explanations.
Investigators concluded it was not a balloon, aircraft, or astronomical event. Although not confirmed, a nuclear explosion was considered. The report was compiled by military personnel, with no photos taken but a radar sketch made. The lack of concrete data and the unusual Russian aircraft response kept the mystery around this event.
