🇺🇸 USAF — Project Blue Book
In February 1958, personnel at Gander AFB in Newfoundland reported an unidentified aerial phenomenon observed both visually and by radar. The object appeared on radar moving erratically from southeast to northwest, while a visual sighting placed it at 45 degrees elevation and 152 degrees azimuth, not matching the radar track. Witnesses, considered highly reliable including radar maintenance staff, could not identify the object as an aircraft, balloon, or astronomical phenomenon. The sighting lasted 1.5 hours, but no photographs or speed data were recorded. Despite ruling out some possibilities, the nature of the object remained unresolved.
The official report concluded there was insufficient data for a conclusive evaluation. It noted that winds were coming from the west, complicating the balloon hypothesis. Ground and aerial searches were conducted but found no physical evidence. Although a weather balloon or astronomical event was considered, the erratic movement and duration of the sighting did not fit conventional explanations. Ultimately, the case was classified as "unknown" pending further information.
