Summary

A 1958 report describes a UFO sighting near Gander on the island of Newfoundland. According to the witness, a disk-shaped object, on fire, fell from the sky and landed in a wooded area. Later, a clearing measuring 1/4 mile by 1000 feet was found with freshly uprooted trees and snow cleared in a perfect rectangular shape. There were no tracks, no metal evidence, and no melted snow. The local investigation concluded the witness had a reputation for exaggeration and lost interest when told the incident would not receive publicity. Although the object was considered possibly astronomical, like the star Arcturus, the description of the clearing and lack of physical evidence suggest a more mysterious explanation.

The official report noted the witness could not guide a ground party back to the site due to unfamiliarity with the area. A reconnaissance flight using aircraft like the L-20 or C-47 was suggested to locate the clearing. Aerial photos could help understand the phenomenon. Despite efforts, no conclusive evidence was found, and the case was classified as unknown. The presence of multiple sightings and the detailed description of the clearing have kept interest in this case for decades.
