Summary

In February 1958, an observer on St. Lawrence Island, Alaska, reported a luminous object that remained stationary for almost half an hour. The witness, a U.S. Air Force airman, described it as a white light the size of a half-dollar coin, initially jagged in shape but smoothing over time. The observation was made using binoculars, and no movement was recorded. Due to the object's proximity to the horizon and a very low elevation (approximately 2 degrees), investigators concluded it was likely on the same island. However, the line of sight pointed toward Soviet territory, raising some concern.

Weather conditions were cold and stable, with high atmospheric pressure and moderate winds. Despite radar efforts, the object could not be detected. Several hypotheses were considered, including a balloon, an astronomical phenomenon, or even a distant explosion. Eventually, it was suggested the light could have been a bright star like Capella, which matched the reported direction. The sighting remained in archives for decades before being declassified.
