Summary

In April 1958, an observer at Lowry AFB, Colorado, reported an unidentified object with satellite-like characteristics. The object was seen for 3-4 minutes and described as a satellite-type vehicle with two sections of differing reflectivity. The front section was as bright as a third or fourth magnitude star, while the rear part was much brighter, comparable to a second magnitude star. No tumbling motion was observed, and the object was estimated to be the size of Sputnik II or larger. The observers, including a USAF officer and an amateur astronomer, used a six-inch telescope, adding credibility to the sighting. The report was sent to Dr. Hynek and no match was found with known satellites, including Explorer or Vanguard.

The official analysis concluded the object might be related to the 1958 Gamma satellite, launched in March of that year. However, the observers found no confirmation of this identification from the Smithsonian or other tracking teams. The lack of photographs and the inability to obtain physical evidence due to the absence of photographic equipment and the brief duration of the event complicated the evaluation. Despite this, the detailed description and the observers' experience suggest the report deserves serious consideration, especially given the context of the space race in those years.
