Summary

In June 1958, an officer from the U.S. Air Force flying in a B-52 spotted an oval-shaped object, the size of a pinhead and reddish in color. The object was as bright as a second-magnitude star and was moving from south to north at a speed that ruled out the possibility of it being an aircraft or a meteor. The observer, Eugene H. Richards, along with the aircraft commander, concluded that the object was likely the rocket portion of Sputnik III, which was passing through the area at that time.

The exact location of the sighting was 10 miles west of Huntsville, Texas, and the official Project 10073 report classified the object as the Sputnik III rocket. Although there was a discrepancy of about three minutes between the sighting time and the predicted position of the rocket, analysts considered this difference acceptable due to the inaccuracy of orbital predictions. Thus, the report concluded that the observed object was the Sputnik III rocket, not an unexplained phenomenon.
