Summary

In July 1958, a military observer at Etain Air Base in France reported a UFO with an egg-shaped form, the size of a grapefruit, white with intermittent blinking lights. The object moved straight and level for about 25 seconds before disappearing to the north. The detailed description of the object and its unusual behavior generated interest among military authorities, who considered the possibility of it being a balloon, an aircraft, or an astronomical phenomenon. However, there was no definitive confirmation, and it was speculated that it might be related to Sputnik III, the Soviet satellite.

The report includes additional observations from another witness in Chambley, near Etain, who also saw a similar object. Weather and wind data were recorded to rule out atmospheric conditions that might explain the appearance. Despite efforts to identify the object, no conventional explanation was found. Authorities concluded there were no aircraft or radar contacts with the object, leaving the sighting without a clear resolution. This case exemplifies how UFO reports were treated with seriousness during the Cold War, when any unidentified phenomenon could have national security implications.
