In August 1958, a witness in Salamanca, New York, observed thousands of metallic objects falling from the sky. They glittered in the air and appeared to have been exposed to heat. Some reported feeling a tingling sensation when touching them. The event sparked various theories, ranging from jet bomber explosions to falling satellites.

The official investigation concluded the objects were similar to radar chaff, a material commonly used by air forces to confuse radar systems. A spectrographic analysis confirmed the material matched an aluminum alloy specified for military use.
