Summary

In August 1958, a witness in Salamanca, New York, observed thousands of metallic objects falling from the sky. They glittered in the air and appeared to have been exposed to heat. Some reported feeling a tingling sensation when touching them. The event sparked various theories, ranging from jet bomber explosions to falling satellites.

The official investigation concluded the objects were similar to radar chaff, a material commonly used by air forces to confuse radar systems. A spectrographic analysis confirmed the material matched an aluminum alloy specified for military use. Although no aircraft was seen, it was considered possible the objects were released during an exercise. The official report did not completely rule out an unexplained phenomenon but pointed to a conventional explanation.
