Summary

A civilian observer reported an object in January 1959, 10 miles south of Clines Corner, New Mexico. The object, described as grapefruit-sized with colors shifting between green, blue, and orange, moved irregularly, speeding up and stopping. Despite its unusual appearance, investigators concluded it was likely the star Spica, distorted by atmospheric conditions. The observer saw it for 15-20 minutes while driving, covering about 75 miles. The object appeared to move eastward, and at one point it suddenly accelerated, disappearing from view.

The report includes details such as the observer using binoculars and the precise trajectory of the object. Although it initially seemed like an aerial phenomenon, the analysis ruled out balloons and aircraft, pointing to an astronomical explanation. This sighting, recorded under Project 10073, shows how even in the 1950s, UFO reports were carefully analyzed to determine if they had a natural or artificial cause.
