In January 1959, a pilot and a control tower operator at Vance Air Force Base in Oklahoma reported a bright object in the sky. The object, described as a light shifting between red, orange, blue, and green, appeared at around 33,000 feet and remained visible for 10 minutes. The pilot attempted to close the distance but failed. Observers used binoculars and described the object as round, pea-sized, with no discernible features or sound.

The official investigation concluded the object was likely the star Fomalhaut, which was near the horizon at the time.
