In January 1959, an observer in Custer Park, South Dakota, spotted an object moving slowly westward. The phenomenon was observed for fifteen minutes from two different locations, first from a car and then from a lookout tower. The object made no sound and appeared to be in the upper atmosphere, leading to speculation that it could be a satellite or balloon.
Investigators cross-checked star charts and found the object did not align with the position of the star Fomalhaut, as initially thought. It was suggested that clouds might have created the illusion of movement. Despite efforts to classify it, the report concluded there was insufficient data to determine the object's true nature.
