🇺🇸 USAF — Project Blue Book
In June 1959, an aerospace technician in Reno, Nevada, observed a mysterious object in the sky. Sergeant Douglas J. Lawson, known for his experience in aircraft maintenance, described a silvery reflection with no defined shape that disappeared suddenly. Although initially thought to be a UFO, investigators concluded it was likely a weather balloon. Weather conditions and the object's lack of movement supported this theory, especially considering a balloon had been launched in the area shortly before the sighting.
The observation occurred on a clear day with unlimited visibility, and the witness, who wore corrective glasses, described the object as approximately the size of a quarter held at arm's length. Despite his aircraft knowledge, Lawson did not identify it as a plane. The lack of air traffic in the area and Reno Tower's report of a large balloon reinforced the hypothesis that it was a weather balloon that burst at high altitude. This investigation shows how even reliable witnesses can be misled by natural or artificial phenomena in the sky.
