Summary

A 1959 report describes a luminous object that crossed the sky near Woodruff, Wisconsin, during an aurora borealis display. Two civilians observed a bright object moving at an extremely high speed from northeast to southwest. The object, which changed from white to red as it burned, was seen for 15 seconds. About a minute after it disappeared, the witnesses heard four distinct sounds, similar to the report of an 88 mm gun. Although no photos were taken, the observers described the phenomenon in detail, including the lack of sound during the visual sighting.

The official evaluation suggested the object could have been part of the aurora borealis or a jet aircraft engaging its afterburner. The coincidence between the sound and the object’s disappearance was considered accidental. Meteorological data and wind conditions at different altitudes showed no abnormal activity, except for the presence of the aurora borealis and shooting stars. Despite no conclusive evidence, investigators concluded the phenomenon was likely natural, though the possibility of an aircraft in the area was not ruled out.
