Summary

In October 1959, an observer in Castorville, Texas, spotted a mysterious cigar-shaped object with an orange fire-like color, roughly the size of a grapefruit. The object was seen for 20 minutes and slowly moved toward the horizon. Although the witness used binoculars, they couldn't identify the object. Investigators concluded it was likely an isolated cloud illuminated by the setting sun, creating an optical illusion that suggested vertical movement. The clear skies and reported scattered clouds at 3,500 feet supported this explanation.

The official investigation found no evidence that the object was a satellite, astronomical phenomenon, or balloon. Nearby radars also failed to detect anything. While the observers were deemed reliable, no definitive confirmation of the object's nature was possible. Ultimately, the phenomenon was attributed to an unusual lighting effect on a drifting cloud, not an unknown object.
