🇺🇸 USAF — Project Blue Book
In January 1960, a United Airlines pilot reported a blue and yellow flaming object over Norman Mesa, Nevada. The aircraft was at an altitude of 20-25,000 feet when the object suddenly appeared, moved rapidly southwest, and disappeared at the same level. The aircraft's radar failed to detect it, and the pilot's observation lasted only five seconds. Despite the brevity, the description matched that of a typical meteor. The sighting was shared with astronomical experts, including Lick Observatory, who found no unusual activity in the area, supporting the theory that it was a natural phenomenon.
The official report classified the sighting as likely a meteor, given the object's description and the impossibility of it being a balloon, aircraft, or artificial phenomenon. Although the pilot could not provide further details after landing, the reliability of the account was considered good. This brief encounter reflects how many UFO sightings are resolved with natural explanations, though they continue to spark curiosity and debate.
