🇺🇸 USAF — Project Blue Book
A pilot reported a luminous object with a tail during a night flight over the Atlantic. The sighting occurred on February 1, 1960, at 22:03, near the coordinates 53°05'N and 22°15'W. The object, described as a white light with a long tail, was 3 to 4 times the size of a star. Two green flares appeared to detach from the object and descend to about 20 degrees above the horizon. The observation lasted 12 seconds, and the object moved generally southwest before fading away.
Investigators concluded that the object was a bolide, a bright meteor entering Earth's atmosphere. Although the pilot was the only one to directly report the sighting, it was assumed that other crew members also observed it. Due to the classic description of an astronomical phenomenon, the report was not classified as "single witness." This entry is part of a historical archive of unidentified aerial observations from the Cold War era.
