Summary

In April 1960, an amateur photographer and astronomy enthusiast in Arcata, California, captured an image of the setting sun through an 8-inch telescope. In the photograph appeared a round object between the sun and Earth, which the witness described as a translucent, moving body. Although the object's size suggested something the size of Venus or Mercury, technical analyses later found no evidence that it was a real physical entity.

The U.S. Air Force, through its ATIC division, reviewed the images and concluded that the object was likely a film defect or a particle in the air. No signs of diffraction or atmospheric distortion were observed, indicating the phenomenon was not related to a physical object in the atmosphere. Despite the tests and analysis, no definitive answers were found, and the case was filed without further urgency.

The document includes three photographs as evidence, including images of the sun and the moon, but experts determined the object in question was a film artifact. Although the witness insisted he had observed something real, technical analyses did not support his testimony. The case, while intriguing, did not generate further alarm or investigation.
