Summary

A bright object was observed on the night of April 19, 1960, northwest of the Azores in the Atlantic. Civilian and military witnesses reported a glowing object that turned very bright white before disintegrating into trailing pieces. Two bright green streaks of light were seen 3 to 5 seconds apart. Although balloon and aircraft possibilities were considered, the data pointed more toward an astronomical event, such as a meteor. The observation lasted only 5 seconds, limiting the chance to identify the object with certainty. Its speed and horizontal trajectory suggested a celestial body, though other explanations were not ruled out.

The information was collected by U.S. Air Force personnel and transmitted to multiple units, including NORAD and intelligence centers. Despite no photos being taken, several reports align on the event's description. A barrier pilot confirmed the object was intensely bright and moving at great speed, tracing a 45-degree arc in just seconds. Investigators ultimately concluded it was likely a meteor, though the possibility of an unknown phenomenon was not dismissed.
