🇺🇸 USAF — Project Blue Book
An object was sighted east of Japan in May 1960, during a clear night with unlimited visibility. A co-pilot of KLM flight 868, at 19,000 feet altitude, described it as a bright white sphere with a red tail that appeared to break off in pieces. The object appeared about 50-60° above the horizon and disappeared at 35-40°, arcing slightly downward from the east. The observation lasted 2-3 seconds. Although the witness did not consider it a meteor, investigators concluded it was likely a meteorite or a possible reentry object. No photos were taken, but the description and trajectory matched typical meteor characteristics.
