🇺🇸 USAF — Project Blue Book
In August 1960, multiple UFO sightings were reported in the Red Bluff, California area. Two state highway patrol officers observed a football-shaped object with red and white lights hovering 200 feet above the ground. Initially mistaken for an aircraft, they noticed it made no sound and exhibited unusual movement. Other witnesses, including residents and correctional officers, also reported similar objects. The official investigation concluded that atmospheric refraction, particularly a temperature inversion, likely caused the sightings. However, witnesses consistently described behaviors inconsistent with natural phenomena.
The region's atmosphere was affected by forest fire smoke and a thermal inversion, conditions that can create mirages or distort light. Despite this, witnesses insisted the objects moved deliberately and reacted to their actions. The lack of radar confirmation and the inability to identify a clear light source led to the official conclusion, though doubts remain. This case, like many others, highlights how the inexplicable can have scientific explanations, even if they don't always satisfy those who experienced it.
