🇺🇸 USAF — Project Blue Book
In September 1960, a witness in Otterbein, Indiana, reported a stationary object in the sky flashing red, green, and amber lights. The sighting was recorded at 01:48 local time, with the object at about 30 degrees elevation. Despite its unusual appearance, the Terre Haute air traffic controller confirmed it was not a UFO, but the star Altair. Haze at 8,000 to 9,000 feet made accurate identification challenging.
The Air Force investigation concluded the object was astronomical, specifically the star Altair. This case illustrates how atmospheric conditions and lack of astronomical knowledge can lead to confusion when observing celestial objects. Although initially puzzling, expert confirmation identified it as a well-known star.
