A spear-shaped object that later appeared round was observed by a driver near Wendover and Salt Lake City in 1960. The witness described it as the size of a silver dollar that grew larger as it descended, with a silver color that turned into a pulsating orange-red. The object moved rapidly southwest, so fast that it made a jet seem stationary. Despite a 40-minute observation, there were no photographs or radar data.

The official conclusion pointed to Venus being refracted, though other possibilities like weather balloons, aircraft, or lens-shaped clouds were also considered. The witness, a civilian truck driver, saw the object through the rearview mirror of his truck, limiting the accuracy of the evaluation.
