Summary

In October 1960, a family in Paulding, Ohio, noticed a very bright star in the sky that appeared over several nights. The object was seen in different positions—sometimes in the east, other times in the southwest—and it changed colors between white, orange, and red. On more than one occasion, it suddenly disappeared, as if moving away from the observer. The person who reported the phenomenon, along with neighbors and family members, tried to understand what it could be but found no clear explanation. Eventually, they contacted air authorities for help.

The investigation concluded that the observed phenomenon was actually the planet Jupiter, which at that time was in a position and brightness that made it appear extremely luminous. The color changes were attributed to atmospheric refraction, a common explanation for objects in the night sky. Although the observers could not obtain photographs or complete the requested questionnaires from authorities, the astronomical explanation turned out to be the most plausible. The case illustrates how what seems inexplicable can have a natural cause, even if it initially appears mysterious.
