Summary

In November 1960, two women in Monticello, Illinois, observed two round, flat objects moving in a back-and-forth pattern. The witnesses described the objects as disc-shaped, roughly the size of a bushel basket, with no visible features or sound. The constant motion and lack of noise confused observers, as the objects didn’t resemble balloons or conventional aircraft. The objects suddenly vanished to the north, adding to the mystery.

The official report suggested the objects might have been lights reflected on a cloud layer, though witnesses insisted there were no clouds in the opposite quadrant. Investigating officer Edward L. Baker concluded that while the witnesses were sincere, others in the area believed the phenomenon was artificial lights. Despite the lack of conclusive evidence, the case remains a classic example of an unexplained sighting.
