In November 1960, a witness in Great Barrington, Massachusetts, observed three objects in the sky. Two remained stationary and glowed with a red, flashing light, while the third moved from east to west. The official report classified the sighting as a probable combination of stars and an aircraft. The witness, a local civil defense official, contacted several authorities but no air traffic was reported in the area. The detailed description of the moving object suggests a straight, silent flight path, with no interference to TV reception, raising doubts about its conventional identity.
The official analysis concluded that the two stationary objects were likely the stars Betelgeuse and Rigel, while the third was possibly an aircraft. However, the report also notes that a typical aircraft does not behave in such a way, leaving open the possibility that the witness saw something unusual. The lack of photographic evidence and the inability to determine the objects' altitude contributed to the ambiguity of the case. Despite official conclusions, the testimony remains a classic example of an unidentified sighting.
