In January 1961, a classified report described an aerial phenomenon in Northeast India. A local guide observed a ball of light rising in a straight line before disappearing. Another witness saw a white streak already formed in the sky, about 60 degrees above the horizon. The streak appeared to hook toward the north and resembled smoke illuminated by sunlight, even though sunset had occurred about 30 minutes earlier. The streak diffused and disappeared entirely within five minutes. A third observer also confirmed the phenomenon.
Investigators considered various explanations, such as balloons or aircraft, but no definitive conclusion was reached. The possibility of it being smoke from a balloon launched in 1960 was mentioned, though the final report concluded that the data was insufficient for evaluation. The report relied on visual observations without photos, limiting its scientific value. Despite the uncertainties, the case remains an unresolved mystery in the history of unidentified aerial phenomena.
