A bright green fiery object with a red tail was observed over Tarawa Island in the Pacific on January 8, 1961. Witnesses described a luminous body moving at high speed across the sky, with a red trail, traveling east to west below cumulus clouds. The phenomenon lasted about five seconds and was seen at an approximate altitude of 30 degrees. Although initially intriguing, investigators concluded it was likely a large meteor, typical of the meteor showers common during that season.
The description and duration of the event matched those of a fireball, a particularly bright meteor. Additionally, no satellites were re-entering the atmosphere at that time, ruling out other possibilities. Despite the lack of photos or more detailed data, later analyses point to a natural explanation. The report, declassified decades later, confirms there was no evidence of unexplained phenomena or extraterrestrial activity.
