🇺🇸 USAF — Project Blue Book
In 1961, a witness in Portales, New Mexico, reported a sudden appearance of an unidentified flying object in the sky. The object was observed at 45 degrees above the horizon, directly to the north, and exhibited a bluish-green glow similar to an electric arc. According to the report, the object had a black exhaust trail about five feet long, resembling rocket engine emissions. The witness described the event as unexpected and brief, lasting only a few minutes.
Authorities classified the incident as possibly a balloon, though other explanations such as an astronomical object or an aircraft were not ruled out. Despite clear visibility and no cloud cover, no definitive explanation was provided. The report, part of a government investigation project, reflects the typical uncertainty of many UFO cases from that era, where sightings were often hard to verify. This case, though short-lived, adds another piece to the mystery of unexplained aerial phenomena.
