Summary

In February 1961, a witness at Tyndall AFB, Florida, reported a bright elliptical object resembling a "grapefruit" in size. The object moved west to east, appearing to bounce every five seconds. Initially confusing, later analysis concluded it was the planet Venus. Venus was at its brightest (-4.3 magnitude) and in the exact direction reported by the witness. The apparent "bouncing ball" effect was attributed to atmospheric refraction, which distorts light from objects near the horizon.

The official report classified it as an astronomical phenomenon, not an unknown object. Despite the detailed description, confusion was common during that era, with many UFO reports later identified as natural or known objects. This case exemplifies how science and careful observation can resolve seemingly inexplicable mysteries.
