Summary

In March 1961, an aircrew in the Pacific reported a mysterious pencil-shaped object, red and white, that disintegrated in the air. The phenomenon was observed for five seconds before the object broke into four pieces and disappeared. The crew described a straight trajectory and a bright tail, characteristics similar to those of a bolide, a meteorite that explodes upon entering the atmosphere. This report, classified under Project 10073, was shared among several military units and analyzed by experienced personnel, including engineers with thousands of flight hours.

The observations coincided between two aircraft separated by 100 miles, increasing the credibility of the report. Although initially considered the possibility of a balloon or an astronomical phenomenon, the data pointed more toward a celestial body disintegrating. Officers concluded it was likely a space vehicle reentering the atmosphere, an explanation that fit the available data. This case is an example of how UFO reports often relate to natural or atmospheric phenomena that may seem unexplainable at first glance.
