Summary

In April 1961, an unidentified flying object was detected on radar near Cape Canaveral, Florida, prior to the launch of a Polaris missile. Three experienced observers tracked the target on an FPS-8 radar for 30 minutes, estimating speeds between 150 and 600 knots. The object orbited approximately 6 or 7 times along an azimuth of 126 degrees, staying between 10 and 55 miles from the cape. Observers disagreed on the object’s altitude, reporting it as either very low or very high. A surveillance C-54 was vectored within 2.5 miles of the target, but the crew reported no positive identification. Analysis concluded the target was real, though no clear explanation for its behavior was found.

Subsequent tests revealed the radar returns were from SIF equipment aboard a U-2 aircraft. However, during the incident, this was not confirmed due to radar limitations and the object’s unusual behavior. The report noted no evidence of technical malfunctions or false echoes, and the target’s pattern suggested a real object. Despite efforts, the mystery of the object remained unresolved, with suggestions for further inspections to rule out equipment issues.
