Unusual maneuvers of a UFO in Massachusetts

Summary

In May 1961, an 18-year-old in South Hadley, Massachusetts, observed a bright silver object the size of a pea. The object appeared at about 80 degrees elevation, moving from the southwest and making a series of sharp, unexpected turns. Initially moving straight, it made an abrupt left turn, followed by a sharp right turn. The observer estimated the distance between turns to be similar to a 4-inch ruler held at arm's length. After another left turn, the object straightened and disappeared. The sighting lasted at least 20 seconds.

Although the observer was certain it was not an aircraft, investigators considered the possibility that it was a plane in the traffic pattern at nearby Westover AFB. However, the lack of corroborating witnesses led to the report being classified as "Insufficient Data for Evaluation." The young student, who had frequently seen military jets and weather balloons, insisted this object was different. The absence of additional information and the inability to confirm the presence of balloons or aircraft in the area left the mystery unresolved.
